Questions Thread #4

Don't miss one article! Subscribe to the Full Feed RSS or get NPA in your inbox.

This is an open thread where people should post any questions or comments they have about poker. I’m enjoying doing this blog so far, and I’ve been thrilled to have a steady supply of questions to keep me occupied and writing. Let’s keep those questions flowing.

Post a hand you played where you weren’t sure what to do. Post a theoretical quetsion. Ask about tilting or psychological considerations. I’m happy to talk about anything poker… and feel free to comment on other people’s questions. The more discussion, the better we all get.

Hi Ed,

I like the change to the site. I just read your post on how to play against tight players. As on your “Adjusting Your Play” DVD, it’s great stuff!

Along similar lines, can you give us a few tips on how to adjust to loose-aggressive-tricky players?

Especially in heads-up situations, this type gives me a headache. These battles most often occur when they raise my blind or I raise theirs. I have a hand and go for a check-raise, and they check behind. I bet a marginal hand and they raise. I call down with a small pair or A-high, and they have a better hand. I zig when I should have zagged….

So, any advice?

Its hard to give a universal style for tricky players, cause as you say yourself – they are tricky. If you start to play in a pattern they will adapt to that pattern. When I am faced with such an opponent I ussualy check and call more often but also allow my pre flop fold % to raise a little.
And then I make moves when I think I got a read. You will experience that most of the time they are bluffing. And if you give them some resistence once in a while they will sometimes tighten up.
