Q&A #74: Who Wins When A Flush Is On Board?

Just like the last Q&A, today’s question is one that I see often, yet haven’t answered yet.

Abe asks,

Who wins the hand?

Community cards A  K  Q  10  7

Joe has K :club: 9
Tom has 5  6

I believe Joe wins.My friend says they split the pot because the community hand has a flush.

Please resolve this dispute

To figure out who wins, you always form for each player the best 5-card hand out of the 7 cards available. Tom’s best 5-card hand is A  K  Q  10  7  (playing the board). Since the 6 and 5 he holds are both less than the 7, neither card plays.

Joe’s best hand is A  K  Q  10  9  . Since his 9  is higher than the 7  , it plays in his final hand. Joe therefore has the better hand because his 9  beats Tom’s 7  , and Joe would win the pot.
