Professional No Limit Hold’em: Volume II Update

I got a couple of emails this morning asking me when Professional No Limit Hold’em: Volume II was coming out, and I realized that I hadn’t given you guys an update in a while, so here we go.

Progress is very good, and I’m really excited with how the book is turning out. We’re writing furiously, and at the pace we’re going I think we’ll have a first draft basically completed in 12-15 weeks. Allowing a few months for editing and printing, the book should be ready sometime in the second half of this year. I’ve been on the “one book per year” schedule since Small Stakes Hold’em came out in 2004, and I expect to finish 2008 with an unblemished 5-for-5 record. :)

This book is very different from Volume I; it’s more of a complementing book than a sequel. It takes a practical, example-driven approach, and it covers many topics thoroughly that were touched on only briefly in PNL1. Topics we’ve already written in depth about include:

  • Hand reading (I’d say most of the book is about hand reading to some extent or another)
  • Preflop 3-betting and 4-betting strategies (and responding to 3-bets)
  • Continuation betting and when to fire two and three barrels
  • Value betting, particularly on the river
  • Balancing pot control against protecting your hand
  • Choosing the right spots to run more sophisticated bluffs
  • Adjusting to various player types

As I said, the book is example-driven, which means that the bulk of the text will consist of hand examples designed to teach the various concepts. The examples come from live and online play, full ring and 6-max. Sunny and I have been playing a lot of online 6-max lately, so rest assured that the book will contain a lot of stuff that will be immediately useful in those games. Most of the examples involve playing stacks around 100BB, but there are some deeper and shallower stack examples as well.

PNL2 doesn’t rehash the theoretical topics presented in PNL1 or some of the other poker texts. This stuff is all hands-on, practical, and fresh.

Hand reading (I’d say most of the book is about hand reading to some extent or another)

Fantastic! Hand reading has to be one of the weakest parts of my game and one of the most difficult things for me to get right. PNL1 was of great help with all the discussion about commitment but I welcome eagerly any text that will help me with hand reading.

Looking forward to another great book! I for one will be insta-purchasing my copy.

Excellent! I heartily concur on hand-reading. The NLH topics most neglected in existing literature (IMHO) are:

1. Hand-reading
2. Play in the blinds
3. Dealing with aggression. Existing literature all seem to assume that your opponents are loose-passives. This may be true in many live games but there are many more TAGs and LAGs online.

Cool will definitely be buying this one.

And make sure you include a topic on playing while completely drunk, i think this is probably the biggest form of leakage for most players

:)

Just discovered your site…frankly, I’ve been playing lots of razz poker. Have you taken up the frustration/winning habit of Razz yet?

Ed,
Looking forward to the book. My record is similar to yours, I’ve purchased 4 Ed Miller books in the last 4 years. =)

At this time I am still playing full-ring only. Can you briefly state adjustments when incorporating 6-max examples for someone like myself.

I know solid poker is solid poker regardless, and you mentally adjust your position for missing players. But also, from everything I’ve watched and read from you guys at Stox, they do play differently(aggession?etc.)

I know a lot of this would come from experience playing both, but since I don’t have that I was hoping you could give me somewhat of a nutshell response? thanks. JC

Hi Ed,

Great video on Stox about hand reading. Just downloaded it and watched the first half. The combinatronics (?) stuff is *exactly* the sort of information I’ve been wanting to wrap my head around.

I appreciate the fact that it’s geared to the microstakes, too. (Although, as you mention, it applies to higher stakes as well.)

Many thanks. I look forward to the next vids in this particular series.

OH! That’s how it works…
My comment didn’t turn up, so I pressed ‘refresh’ button and: now my comment is up AND I’m logged in.
Good!
BTW, my coffee hobby keeps me up at that late hour  and dreaming on a lever machine… I’m childish.

Pawel,

there appear to be times when a little milk in your coffee might be appropriate… :)

Hi Ed –

One thing I might mention — or add to my post above: I liked the new hand reading/combo vid a lot — but I’d like to see more info on how the specific values are derived.

In other words, the (52*51)/2 type math (for pf, for example).

For us non-math folks — or for me, at least — the idea of combos is strangely counterintuitive. Not sure why counting is so difficult — but it took me a lot of fiddling with paper and a deck of cards to even wrap my head around the idea of 6 combos with the four aces. Now I understand it’s the idea of (4*3)/2 — but it took me a while to figure that out and to see the underlying concept (even more important, I take it, than the result itself).

Still, a great vid — and the only stox vid I watched three times to get it down.

hi,
how about PNL vol 2?

It’s the end of 2010 and i think and hope it’s out.
By the way PNL-1 and other books I’ve read from E.Miller are great, tough it would be more useful to explain some and more maths under equity, odds, and so on.

waiting to hear, bye
