Another Good Review

We’re extremely flattered by all the great reviews coming in for Small Stakes No-Limit Hold’em. Today we found one from ML4L who is a long-time respected high stakes no-limit poster on 2+2. Here’s what he had to say about the book:

[Small Stakes No-Limit Hold'em] is the best NL book I’ve read; the knowledge is worth thousands of dollars to full-time mid-stakes players.

Thanks ML4L!

UPDATE: The review was disappeared by 2+2. The above link is dead, but left for posterity. So you’ll have to take my word that this is what it said. :)

Started playing about 4 months ago.
Found Ed’s “Getting Started in Hold’em” to be the best intro to the game, then i moved on to Dan Harrington “Cash Games Vol 1″ which has been my “take everywhere” bible. Now with SSNLHE I have to admit that I am having a hard time with many of these concepts, especially the chapter on “Barreling” which i find confusing and hard to follow. I’m sure that’s because I am a newbie (and a fish!), but I will keep on reading SSNLHE, Harrington, Phil Gordon, and so on. Perhaps 6 or 7 months from now i will do a Re-read on SSNLHE and hopefully things will fall into place in my mind.

I have no interest in tournaments, only want to be a cash game (6-max) specialist, so i know that SSNLHE is the right book for me.

Thanks! Daniel.

Hi Daniel,

Congrats on your new career. :)

I agree that SSNLHE is probably the best book for you, but I’m not surprised you’re finding it challenging at this point. It’s a quite advanced book for someone who has been at this for just 4 months… but I still think it’s the right book for you because you will definitely “grow into” it.

Understanding barreling is, IMO, one of the key, key humps for a NLHE player to get past. It’s where you learn to focus on your opponents… what they have and what they’ll do. But getting those reads requires experience as well as knowing generally what to look for.

I think the review has been deleted.

Oh well… things do have a bit of a habit of disappearing on 2+2.

Ml4L’s entire thread appears to have been deleted. For those who didn’t catch it, ML4L asked whether he should finish a book that he started awhile ago, whether there would still be an audience for it, whether it has been superseded by various recently published books. Perhaps the thread ran afoul of Mason’s anti-self-promotion-of-as-yet-unpublished-books policy? Or maybe Mason just doesn’t like it when someone says something nice about Ed, Matt and Sunny’s work???

Well, they are technically the competition now, and with all the praise the ebook has recieved, it’s no wonder he feels threatened. Particularly since 2+2 is now entering the ebook market. I think this goes beyond the “self-promotion” line of b.s. and is probably personal. He knows what a talent Ed (and Matt, Sunny) is and probably regrets having losing him in his stable of authors.

Hi vb—

Mason has undoubtedly been conducting a personal vendetta against Edward (and Matt into the bargain–Sunny still has a live account). However, in this case ML4L’s entire thread was disappeared, not just the post about Edward, Matt, and Sunny’s ebook. There is further no doubt that Mason’s business model is, um, threatened by new developments in poker instructional materials, including training sites and self-published ebooks. I heard through the grapevine that Mason had been going around trying to scrounge manuscripts from people he had previously blown off–which may or may not be true. What is certainly true is that Mason used to say that he had too many projects to consider taking on new ones and now more recently has publicly solicited new projects.

ML4L’s thread was about whether he should finish a partially written manuscript, nothing to do with Edward and something Mason might even consider publishing if it is completed and good. So why did the whole thread get disappeared? Afaik Mason is developing just one new author, Thomas Bakker from the Netherlands. I certainly hope that in Bakker’s case Mason hires a real professional editor, not just a proofreader. Educated Netherlanders tend to have excellent (but not perfect) English. I personally have done a lot of editing for Dutch academics writing scholarly papers in English–and they do need the help. Otherwise Mason’s stable is now down to Dan, Dr. Al, and David, unless I missed something.

When this whole mess started with [censored]‘s attack on Elaine, I thought for sure Mason would come down on the side of protecting 2p2′s relationship with Edward, but that is not what happened, not at all. IMO Mason verschnuppt himself as they say in PA Dutch country where I grew up, that is to say, cut off his nose to spite his face. Oh well, if Mason doesn’t regret what happened, he should. Edward, OTOH, IMO should have no regrets about the severed relationship with Mason.

Re: Should I Finish My NLHE Strategy Book?

——————————————————————————–

Hey all,

Last reply that I’ll post because I don’t want to keep bumping indefinitely. I appreciate all of the responses. Next step will be to read a couple of the newer books that I haven’t gotten my hands on. Bobbo’s e-book is first up; I’m a little bit concerned that there would be significant overlap there. I also want to grab the new 2+2 heads-up NL book; I would expect that to be heavily theory-based. If I still feel like I have something to offer at that point, I’ll start cobbling together an outline.

re: technologic

You’ll definitely get a complementary copy; you paid for it many times over in the old WM game… Strassa’s rich ass doesn’t get anything for free; I’ll charge him double.

re: Bobbo

You can’t read it, because you’ll probably sue me for plagarism… I’ll be shocked if there isn’t significant overlap with your stuff. Matt/Sunny/Ed could have put a nail in my coffin too, but I think their practical approach leaves me an opening. For anyone who cares, the new Matt/Sunny/Ed book is the best NL book I’ve read; the knowledge is worth thousands of dollars to full-time mid-stakes players.

re: fees

I’m not “really bored” by any stretch; I probably have more going on now than when I quit the first time. If I go through with it, it’s because I want to have something that I can look back at years from now and be proud of.

Best of luck to everyone.

I wanted to buy your e-book, as I have all the others, but it’s a $100? Is this right? I’m afraid a little to steep for me.

The link to ML4L 2+2′s comment is working now.

BTW, now that you are not working with 2+2 any more, why does the site notedpokerautorithy still require a login to read old articles?

At some point there were speculations that it was either a 2+2 or a StoxPoker requirement.

We don’t need to know if ML4L’s comment was real to certify that the book is good… we already know it is.

:)
