Announcing: Small Stakes No Limit Hold’em – The Affordable Poker eBook

I’m proud today to officially announce Small Stakes No Limit Hold’em by Ed Miller, Sunny Mehta, and Matt Flynn. It’s the affordable poker ebook.

Yesterday I posted an update on the book, and since then – as can be expected in the fast-paced world of poker ebooks – a few things have changed.

We hit an unfortunate snag with the timing tells section. You see I always play poker by dialing in with my 14.4kb modem to an ISP located in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I learned long ago that online poker is rigged for anyone who lives in Slovenia. At first I was preparing a move to that land of Alpine serenity and unnerving hyper-aggression, but then this dialing-in tactic came to me in a moment of pure inspiration. Sure it costs a little extra in international calling fees, and I can only play one table at a time. But it’s so worth it to finally be able to hit a freaking set once in a while. (I’ll sell the dial-up number for $5k. Email me.)

Anyway, I developed the timing tells software using the dialup connection. Yesterday I sent the software to Sunny for the first time to test on his broadband connection, and wouldn’t you know the HUD was saying that everyone had aces all the time. So there are a few more bugs than I thought, and I’m afraid we’re not going to have this material ready in time for the book release. The software package is also unfortunately indefinitely on hold.

And the postflop chart. Funny story. Matt read my post yesterday and gave me a call. It turns out that for the last four months he’s been in intense training for a cagefighting match and he never got around to writing the chart. So I’m sorry, but we’re not going to have that for you either.

Enough about what isn’t in the book. Let’s talk about what is. Here is the high-level Table of Contents.

Hilarious!

Your hope is alive and well. I am very excited for your book. And I will take all bets laying 45-1 that I’m not the only one.

Ps. However, I AM disappointed about the post-flop chart. I always tape your charts to the inside of my shirt. Then, before I take any action, I always act like I’m blowing my nose on the inside of my shirt and consult the chart.

For any who like my idea, I’ve had some accidents, so be prudent and lamenate them before taping.

Ed,

I’ve made a postflop chart for you that you are welcome to include. It is from AggroHUSHposter on 2+2, who apparently has been transitioning over to NLHE like so many other from the flock:

Opponent action | Your action
—————-|————-
Check | Bet
Bet | Raise
Raise | Reraise
Call | Taunt
Fold | Mock

Ed> “Two Ed’s are better than one.”

This must be that dry sense of humor that we have heard tell about. :)

I’ll be ordering your book Ed as soon as I can, and don’t worry, I won’t really be offering Venezuelan Bolivars… :)

Ed,

Please consider publishing via a site like Lulu.com that will let you sell ‘print on demand’ books as well as eBooks (in different formats).

Best of both worlds!!

I’m not affliated with Lulu in anyway, I’ve just read about them and think it’s a cool business model for authors.

Will you be able to print it?

I like to read on paper because it is easier on my eyes. Will I be able to read this e-book on paper?

I have a printer.

I have paper, too.

Please consider a moneybookers transfer!
Thanks in advance.

How many pages are we talking about? (Rough estimation?)

Any specific date when preordering will be available?

Most commonly wanted feature: I wanna be able to print it out! :-)

Thanks Ed- I’m dying to read your book.

Bear, I’m glad you are recovering nicely. Hopefully you will have a cool scar to show off.

Like the old saying “Glory lasts, pain fades, and chicks dig scars ”

And for you guys who are asking about printing, I took the liberty of copying and pasting below some comments Ed made earlier about the book.

Quote:

Printing it out is fine and well within your rights once you’ve bought the e-book. I’ll try to make sure it’s easy to print the book out when we choose the system we use to distribute the e-book.

Ed, +1 on lulu or some other print on demand option. Some of us old timers much prefer an actual book as it is more easy to study in places where a laptop isn’t available.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions for devices, paper printing, and payment options. I’ll try to accommodate as many of these requests as possible.

I’m sorry, but the postflop chart is no longer in the works. With 45 million possible boards to cover, we decided that we weren’t making progress quickly enough to finish the project.

Ed,

instead of the omitted postflop chart: could you include some mantras that make the poker gods happy and keep my aces from breaking, two-outers from sucking out on me and make my draws come in more often? That should easily fit on a page or two… :)

Too bad it’s going to be an e-book. I sit at a computer all day so the last thing I want to do is read a book at my computer. I like real books. And no, printing it on a laser printer and putting some crappy binder on it doesn’t cut it.

Ed, sorry – but you are the worst salesman in the world. You’ve ‘officially announced’ a book that you’ve spoken about for ages, still we can’t even pre-order it, and stuff you said would be in it isn’t now going to be… i am looking forward to it but your whole thing has been frustrating to say the least… when is it going to be available? Give a date please so I don ‘t keep coming to the site and get frustrated that there is still no more information.

jim

PS… and then there’s the wait for the pre-ordering, so god only knows when it’ll actually be available…

Pete
@ Fri Apr 10, 2009 01:58:13 PM
34

Jim,

I understand your frustration. As a software developer, let me share this idea with you:

The last 5% of development not only takes a significant amount of time, it’s the difference between good and great.

If you take a look at the majority of triple A titles that have been released over the last 5 years, the games that ship with the most serious bugs are rushed out the door to meet some type of publisher deadline.

Software development isn’t an exact science. Just when you think you’re done, one bug can effect a number of different systems. This is why most development companies can’t release an exact date unless the game has gone ‘gold’. Meaning, it’s finished, it’s just waiting for distribution. On the last game I worked on, we spent 3 weeks longer in beta testing than expected. I’m glad we were able to do it right.

I have a feeling book publishing isn’t much different. Personally, I rather have it done right than rushed out before it’s polished.

I respect your thoughts Jim, just wanted to toss in another perspective.

Pete

I respect your thoughts too. I’m a director at a top 50 PR agency in the UK. I’m sure the book will be great when it comes out, and that a lot of that will be due to that last 5 per cent of work. But… Ed has a little bit to learn about how to launch a new product well, and not frustrate those that are most likely to buy it!!!

Best

James

James,

Your criticism is fair enough. I definitely apologize for the frustrations (and I’ve had a few myself).

I’m working to get preordering available and a release date nailed down ASAP. Bumbling on my part notwithstanding, I think ultimately the book will be worth it.

Pete

I agree with the launching. When the buzz really started to pick up, I would have liked to have seen the preordering already established.

It’s sort of two sides of the same coin though, fellas. There is a constant barrage of questions on this site (and some others) about when is the book going to be out, give us an update, ballpark it at least, etc. So, Ed does that. But then you have the “things” Pete just articulated.

Jim, do what I’ve been working on, it’s good for poker too.

Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out, breate…….. Thanks Tommy.

gargamel,

It will probably work kinda like software. If we do minor updates – typographical fixes, add a hand here or change a hand there – all that will be free. But if we add 50-100 pages of new material, we’ll probably release that as a 2nd edition, and it may cost a little extra to “upgrade”.

Pete,

I might do a video series based on the book. We’ll see. Interesting idea…

The preordering “soon” is like in a couple of days, or a couple of weeks ?
Say first half of May preordering opens and end of May comes the release ?
As most of people I’m eager to get my eye on your ebook, so a more accurate deadline might make the wait easier :-)
