Are you playing in a tournament or in a cash game?

If it's a sit-and-go tourney, or the late stage of an MTT, then checking it down is generally considered best because it is the best way to eliminate the short stack who is all-in.  When they are eliminated, then everyone else either gets more money or gets a better chance to get into the money.

In a cash game or in the early stage of an MTT (which effectively is just like a cash game), none of this applies.  Bet if you think you can get others to fold.
