Would you say that no limit hold em is a game of pocket pairs? We want to double through our opponent. The classic hand for doing this is a set. We need a pair to get a set, obviously.

I’d say that’s a big of an overstatement.

Pocket pairs ARE very valuable in NLNE, especially when you hit a set.
But that said, quite often at my home game, I see people misplay pocket pairs in two, big costly ways. First, they get their wish and flop a set, but then slow-play their hand and let someone catch up with a straight or a flush.  It seems like people often get too cute with sets and trap themselves.  Secondly, people often get involved with small- and middle-pairs, then get reckless on the flop, even after they miss.

My point isn’t that there aren’t good spots to slow-play or to make a big continuation pet with a small pair, but that, quite often, people get involved with pocket pairs and misplay them after the flop.

Sure.  And once you get tagged as a set miner, expect to never be paid off by any decent players you happen to be playing with.

Doubling through is nice, but the real object is to win more $$ on the pots you win than the amount you lose on the pots you lose.

And there are as many ways to do this as there are winning players.  You could get your opponents to conceed too many small pots, or you could get them to commit too much $$ to a few big pots.

Realistically, though, once you get above the lowest limits, if you play only for sets, you won’t get paid off much when you do finally hit.  And a lot of pots will be stolen from you in the meantime.

Not that sets aren’t great, but they’re best when hidden.

math may be off a little but you pair about 1 in 17 hands
and then set about 1 in 8 of those and you still won’t win
all your sets. bring your pajamas and a pillow.
