I'm more of a cash game player than a tourney player, but I like to mix it up every once in a while. When I do, I seem to run into this situation quite often and I don't know how to deal with/avoid it and it seems to cost me a lot of chips and sometimes a shot and playing on.

Sometimes it happens when I'm the first into the pot and I raise in position with a marginal hand trying to steal or maybe I'll be in the BB for a large amount. Another player who is short stacked will come over the top for an amount that doesn't seem enough to warrant folding. Say the BB is 800, they raise all in for 1400. What do you do? Do you fold or call? I always call and seem to double up a short stack while lessening my stack. Is there a way to avoid these situations? How do others handle them?

I played in a tourney today and this situation came up three times. Each time I had a marginal stack, made the call and lost doubling up a shortstack and hurting myself.

Do you mean they're raising to make it 1400 to go or raising 1400 more?  If the former, you're getting 11:3 (=almost 4:1) odds.   There's virtually no hands you'd want to fold there unless you think they have a very tight raising range, which they shouldn't; maybe 72o and 32o or something.   Also some atypical tournament situations might make it +EV to fold if there's a big increase in the money and some short stacks are about to bust out.

It's disappointing to lose three all-in confrontations in a row but getting 11:3 you only have to win 21% of the time to show a net profit.    If you're folding often getting these odds, and I know you're folding getting these odds, I'm raising ATC when the stack sizes are as you say, and showing a considerable profit!

They are making it 1400 to go, adding 600 to my bet.

At 11:3, you're right, I wouldn't want to fold and I don't. Losing three confrontations is just bad luck here. Maybe I need to be more aware of the stacks around me so I don't wind up in those situations.
