This situation occurred in a $1-2 maximum $200 buy in no limit game. I was in the big blind with a $600 stack. The biggest stack, who was in a middle position, had a $700 stack that I wanted. After a few limpers, Big Stack opened for $17, a late position player with a decent stack called. I looked down at my hand, and found 9c7c, liked the implied odds, and called. The flop was Td8d3c. Wanting to either take down the pot or build it in case I hit my open ender, I opened the flop betting round with a $50 semi-bluff.  Big stack raised to $100, the other player folded; I called.  The turn was the 6h, completing my disguised straight.  I bet $150 into the $250 pot; Big Stack thought for a short time, and called. The river was the 2d.  Thinking that the chances of Big Stack having been on a flush draw were remote, and thinking that he was not putting me on flush draw either, I went all-in, betting about $350 into the $550 pot. Big Stack went into the tank. After about four minutes, I was positive that he did not have a flush, and therefore I really wanted a call. I tried to think of something to say to induce the call, but I couldn’t think of anything that might not push him the other way. After about six minutes, the dealer put Big Stack on the clock, and an argument insued about whether she could do that or had to call the floor. I desperately tried to think of something good to say, and came up with nothing. The floor arrived, put Big Stack on the clock. About forty seconds later, Big Stack remarked that he really wanted to call me, and about ten seconds later folded. So, does anyone have a line to use in this situation?

"I put you on overs…call if you don’t like money"

"I figure the only way I can win this pot is to outplay you"

Anything you say of course may or may not be completely ignored.  I tend to pay much more attention to physical tells, and the actions in relation to those tells.  Does the physical match the action?  When it doesn’t thats when I tend to lean toward the physical, first thing I saw.  I usually 100% discount anything I hear, so "lines" are much less useful as a weapon.  Often they have the reverse effect for what they are intended.

Savvy opponents will do the same, as one of Caro’s best documented tells is to do exactly the opposite of what you opponent wants.  The two above imply exactly the opposite, one weak, one strong.  If you are going to talk at all, which can give away more than you want, as always, know your opponent.

I cannot fault Caro’s thinking based on the outcome of the hand. I’m ready to try it next time. Thanks.
