Ed has been talking about soft games in that hand he posted.

I have a small roll on one site and have been playing NL25 lately.  Here’s a recent favorite hand.

NL25 - 6max

I’m dealt 77 on the button

fold, call, raise $1, hero calls, fold, all-in (~$5),  fold, call

The original raiser who over calls has a stack of about 35.  I have a stack of around 70.  The short stack doesn’t need anything to shove and the CO isn’t screaming strength.  So, I figure my 77 is going to play well against the shover given the overlay.  So, I shove.

The CO now goes into the tank.  In the chat, I see:

omg

JJ

He uses up his timebank and folds

My 7’s hold up and I see:

omg, omg, omfg, how can you shove that

in the chat.  I don’t know.  I think I played my hand face up and, had I been the villain, would have snap called with a fist pump knowing that I have some sort of middle pair. At worst he has to figure he’s flipping with overs.  But that’s clearly not what he figured.  Always a good time when you can push people around like that.

Yeah, your play screwams TT-66 sorta hands to me.  I find even reasonably intelligent players misplay their hands in villain’s spot that you gave.  They just aren’t even trying to see in through your point of view.  I mean, the only way you are doing that with a better hand is if you are doing a multi-level job on them.  I would assume that’s not the case and that you have 77.

In fact the villain probably should have just shoved when he had the chance unless he wanted to multilevel you into making just that move.  Calling and folding seems really like a foolish strategy.

The only level I was playing was "I think you are a weak player and will fold too much".  He was apparently right on my level.

You’re right, he really needed to raise those Js to isolate if he wasn’t trying to induce a shove (which he clearly was’t).  Inducing a shove with Js there is so sexy, though, isn’t it.  I think that is a really exellent line if you have an aggressive player on your left.

Haha, yeah.  I think you were thinking on the correct level.

I always play it out in my head to something like "Well, his play could be correct if…" and so on.

Inducing a shove would be very sexy indeed if he had the read to do it.  Obviously, he isn’t that type of player.  Of course, most players at this level aren’t going to have the in their repertoire.

Multi-level thinking rocks.
