This is pretty much just thinking outloud but I would like to see if  we can get a discussion going on this.

I played a little live 1/2 last night.  The buy max buy-in was 50BB.  The game was moderately loose with 4-5 people to the flop on average.

My intial reaction is that it is a hard stack size to play against a bunch of moderately loose opponents.  If they were looser I could probably just exploit preflop edges and they will tend to call bets that are a significant portion of their stack with the worst of it.  Also, I would have trouble stealing because since they are loose I have little FE.  Also, if I raise to 3BB over one limper in LP as a steal my SPR is going to be ~8.  This is a bit lower than I would like with drawing/stealing hands. This was my initial thoughts about the game when I sat down.

However, ever since reading the book I have been noticing how often people put in 1/3 of their stack and fold.  Since this is a big mistake I believe it is good to note players doing it and then try to make them do it even more.  As the night went on I noticed players were tending to fold to the big turn and river bets.  I am thinking it would have been a good idea to limp/raise pots with some somewhat weak hands with position with the intention of stealing the pot on the turn.  I believe this would still be profitable even though my SPR will be in the 8 range (or ~13 if I limp in a multiway pot).

So, what does everyone think about this?  Can anyone add anything?  Thanks!

I think you’re absolutely right. Don’t go crazy with it or some people will catch on (some may never catch on) — and as soon as you get a big all-in called and have to show or muck, it’s going to be obvious what you’re doing. But stealing rather frequently on the turn or river, especially when you have a good starting hand miss, sounds like a good plan. NLHE:TAP’s chapter on weak-tight opponents sounds applicable here.  At 50 BBL it’s going to be hard to steal often against decent opponents, but it sounds like the way these people fold isn’t decent.

Also, if they’re this loose you’re going to have a lot of preflop edges, so push them hard. If you can make it $20 (10 BBL) or more to go preflop with a good hand and get called one or two places, do so. This reminds me of the GSIHE anecdote from the Mirage where the guy teases Ed about playing too tight — and then goes on to three-bet him with AJ anyway. Such anecdotes aren’t really surprising to anyone who’s played B&M $1-2 NL.

If it works it works.
The SPR figures given in PNLH are standard figures that would apply to many players but if players deviate from those then you should alter your play. If you can deduce that a good steal SPR for your game is 8 then that’s good play and you should utilise it.
I think the real skill when being given new strategies and ideas is knowing how to apply them. I think we can all take information too literally or get so carried away in trying to apply it, lose focus.

I agree. Trying to apply this concept is the idea here.  :)

What I am trying to basically figure out is if an SPR of 8 will carry enough weight to get people to fold the turn.  I am starting to think that it is because so many players at these levels understand commit and think in absolutely dollars.  I saw players put in 1/3 of their stack and then fold more often than calling after doing so.

I am curious if anyone else has any strategies adjustment ideas for a game like this.  I don't like playing in a game and not being exploitive at all!  :)
