Hi all -

Was hoping someone could help me with a common early position spot in PokerStars $0.25 / $0.50 limit hold’em.

In reading Small Stakes Hold’em, the two examples I could find where Ed recommends a checkraise in an 8-10BB, 4-5 player flop (pg. 155 with KT and page 268 with QT) were both after calls out of the big blind when the button raised pre-flop.

What happens when you raise from EP with a hand like KK or KQs and end up hitting a Q75 flop, though? Unlike the examples Ed in the book, you can’t count on a button bet to faciliate your checkraise, but your up front bet still can’t knock out people with 4-5 outs (e.g. AK, AQ against your KK, 98).

What’s the play? Is it a bet? Do you gamble on the checkraise? Do you need a read to see if someone is going to take a stab in late position?

I hit this situation a lot and I’m a bit clueless on what to do.

 Thanks,

 Mike

What type of game are you planning in?  Do you expect a bet if you check?  You don’t want a free card to come off, but if you expect SOMEONE to bet then I think a check makes sense.  You may then get to c/r for value or c/r to offer people poor odds.
