I think it's just silly talk and doesn't mean anything.  I've heard it a time or two meaning they had nothing, opposite of nuts, e.g. “he had the nuts and all I had was donuts”.  Two zeros, worthless cards.  Usually doesn't mean literally worthless cards, just that someone mucked a losing hand and didn't want to show, and they make a joke out of it.
