Posting Behind the Button – Part 2 of 2

In Posting Behind the Button – Part 1 of 2, I discussed how posting behind the button forces you to call raises much more loosely before the flop. You should even call raises with some hands you wouldn’t call with in an unraised pot.

In this part I will discuss one of your other options when someone raises your late position post — reraising.

Say you post behind the button. The first few players fold, and an aggressive player known to raise with a wide range of hands (particularly so when there is a late position post) raises. Everyone folds to you, and you have Q:heart:J:spade:.

If you hadn’t posted, you would probably fold. The raiser could have a lot of different hands, but many of those would still be better than queen-jack. Additionally, three players are yet to act, and one of them could wake up with a big hand.

But since you’ve posted, you usually shouldn’t fold. Your hand is too good and the pot too large to fold to someone who might well be taking a shot at your blind with something like ace-six, ten-eight suited, or pocket fours. So you must choose between calling and reraising.

So I was off work and surfing and found this place and thought I would join up. I don’t have much more to say right now except I need to start reading some of the older posts to get up to speed before I can start posting.

Ed,

I’m surprised.

If a tight, tricky player raises in early position you would fold 44 in late position if you hadn’t posted?

If we were both deep, and the raise wasn’t too big I would definitely call with the 44 in late position.

Playing against a tricky player is bad when you have AK and flop top pair and he hangs on you… but in general I think 44 is great against a tricky player because 44 flops hard when it does hit. When you do flop that set his trickery will turn into his own demise.

But you’re the pro what do i know ;)

Ducks,

This essay is about limit hold’em. Whether you posted or not affects no-limit strategy a whole lot less.
