Many players who play primarily online occasionally go in for a live game or two in a cardroom. While ostensibly the games are the same, online players need to learn some live game “street smarts” to avoid getting taken advantage of. (This works in reverse as well.) Here are a few tips for online players who want to play live for the first (or second or third) time.
Watch What You Say
Verbal action is binding in live games. If you say, “Raise,” then you may well be forced to raise, even if you think it should be clear to everyone that you weren’t declaring your action. Depending on the room, who your opponent is, and who is making the rulings, you could get some very unfair treatment. If your opponent is a regular, the floorman is a friend of his, and you are someone they’ve never seen before, then saying something like, “I should raise you,” if you think your opponent is bluffing may end up binding you to raise. The cardroom manager’s word is final and you don’t have any right to appeal.
Be very careful any time you use the standard poker terms – bet, raise, check call, fold, pass, all-in, etc. – in casual conversation.

Now tell us how not to get raped and cheated in online poker. I have had muck more consistent and positive results in live play than online play. I suspect it has to do with the fact that my style really depends on live reads. Also I tend to get distracted when I play online whereas I am much more focused in a live game.
But sometimes I swear things are uncanny online. I would be hard pressed to say there is cheating, but then again. And I just feel more comfortable playing in a casino when I can see people’s faces. Why all the talk about taking the game from online to live, why not the otherway? Online feels like a total disaster to me.
Thanks for the thoughtful posts.
