The distinction is mulitway versus heads-up/3-way. In a multiway pot, you're much more likely to be beaten than in a heads-up pot, and your opponents are generally less likely to be bluffing or suspect you of bluffing, so often while you might happily commit heads-up with an SPR of 4, you might not want to commit at all with 5 opponents.

The SPR section of PNLv1 has a discussion of adjusting to multiway pots.

Hi,

I'm a little confused; in the "If You’re Playing After One Or More Limpers", when you had KQ you had this SPR problem:

Everyone called making it $150 in the pot preflop. The flop came KT9, and because the preflop pot was so big (and because I had a straight draw to go with my top pair and because he played his hand well) I was essentially forced to commit my remaining $400 against someone who flopped top two

That's 400/150 = 2.7

And then in the "If You’re Playing Against A Raise" section:

leaving you with an SPR under 4. That’s a great SPR for your hand and if you flop top pair, you’ll have no problem committing

Both cases talking about making top pair. Are the SPR so different (under 4 and almost 3) to turn the situation around?

Hmm, I guess I need to study more the SPR concept (and yes, I bought your last book).

Thanks,
