Last month I suggested people give 6-max limit hold ‘em a try. For the good player, it’s more profitable, and it will help you develop poker skills you may have been neglecting at the full tables. I should have included a caveat about higher variance, so I will do that here.
You will experience much more “swinginess” at 6-max than you do at full ring hold ‘em. Long-term that shouldn’t be a problem, but if you jump in underbankrolled with little experience, you can hurt yourself in a hurry. Hence my advice to step down in limit before giving it a shot, but it bears repeating. 6-max hold ‘em is a higher variance game than full ring hold ‘em. But, for good players, it’s also much more profitable, and playing it will help you become a great poker player faster.
Now I’ll offer some more specific 6-max advice. This advice (and those in any future columns about 6-max) are tailored for small limit 6-max hold ‘em online, up to maybe $5-$10 or so. This month we’ll learn to beat the “bettor.”
