The New Book

Today marks an important internal deadline for our new small stakes no-limit hold’em book. It’s the day that we’re completely finished writing. Now we just need to edit (though we’ve done a fair amount of that already), proofread, and typeset/lay it out. I’m not completely sure how long ...

I just ranted yesterday (“Getting stacked”) about my tilt problem, nice to see Ed addressing this problem in this article, that’s really what I would want more in this forum – advice on about how to avoid/control tilt etc.

Can’t wait for Ed’s next book either, he makes concepts so much easier
to comphrehend.

This is so true, and something that everyone who plays games of chance must understand.

I remember when I found out that the profit the casinos make on the Roulette wheel went up by something like 20% when they put up the board that shows the past history of the game. People started saying “Oh look, the last 4 spins came up black” and immediately bet on red, because red is “overdue”. Or they say “4 hasn’t come up in ages” and bet on 4.

I was flabbergasted.

The wheel has no memory, and the cards have no memory either. The past influences the present only if you let it, i.e. if you go on tilt.

Tommy Angelo has a great essay in his book The Elements of Poker on the art of quitting. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to reduce their tilt.

I’ve also found that booking wins, any wins, after a bad spell improves my mood, my love life, and my confidence next time I play.

AFAIK this is will be the first poker e-book available, 2+2 would never have allowed it in fear of copyright infringements. Your ground breaking here ;-)

Also, is there any chance of an audio book version?

Actually there are a few poker ebooks out there: Bobbo fitos, Ryan Fee, and a couple of others. Someone else may have a more comprehensive list. But, you’re right–ebooks and audio books are not Mason Malmuth’s thing.

Hey guys… great to see the interest.

As for an audio book version, I certainly wouldn’t rule it out, but we don’t have plans for it at the moment. Mainly we’re focused on getting the first version of the book out ASAP and then we’ll think about paper, audio, etc.

Hey Ed, can you give me your thoughts on how bad I’m running? I’m mostly playing loose 10 handed 50nl on ipoker and ongame. I’ve run very dry for making money off sets over the past 30k hands.

How far off the norm are these results?

Grant,

You’re definitely running bad on those sets. You expect to flop a set 1 in about 8.5 times. I don’t know for sure how many std devs you are running below average, but I’d guess that, while bad, it’s not THAT out of the ordinary.

At the moment we don’t have plans in place for a paper book. We might well do one, but it probably won’t come out for months after the release of the e-book. So, for the moment, consider this project e-book only.

And we don’t have any solid pricing plans at the moment. But if you want to get the book as cheaply as possible, definitely stay subscribed to the website here… we’ll probably run a pricing promotion upon release or soon thereafter such that regular readers of NPA, subscribers to Stox, and so forth will get a price break if they buy early and during the promotion. I can’t guarantee that because, as I said, we don’t have solid plans. But I think it’s likely we’ll do it that way.

We’ve never had to handle the publishing side of books before, so we’re working things out as best as we can.

Ed,

I’m probably not the only one who has never before bought an e-book. How does that work? I guess we will be able to download a file (or be abel to open it) once we paid. Can I transfer and read that file on more than one computer (i.e. my laptop & my desktop)? Can I print it? How will you protect the file from being copied, shared etc. (aren’t e-books risky in terms of “black” copies starting to float around?)?

I appreciate that you try to get the book out to us as quickly as possible!

check out the free downloadable e-book on 6-max cash games at http://www.ryanfee.com for an example. it’s a downloadable, printable, and transferable .pdf file (need adobe reader to view).

ed can give you the specifics of his book, but this will help you out in the meantime.

Ya.. the spam problem isn’t really recent though… the site is hit with a never-ending supply of spam every day. My spam filtering software usually catches most of it (along with a few false positives… sorry about that guys) but sometimes the spammers start getting through it for a few days at a time.

I wonder if you’ve read the Cole South book or Bobo book or listened to AE Jone’s lecture series. Will your new book be covering any of the same territory? (In a hopefully more cost effective way.) Thanks.
