NPA Giveaway! Bigger Deal by Anthony Holden

Simon & Schuster was kind enough to hook me up with three copies of the new poker narrative, Bigger Deal by Anthony Holden. I’m going to give all three copies away to three of my faithful readers. :) (One of them, unfortunately, is slightly worn from my read-through.)

I’ll post some of my thoughts about the book in a day or two, but for those who don’t know much about it, it’s a followup to Holden’s 1990 classic, Big Deal: A Year as a Professional Poker Player.

Bigger Deal is Holden’s account of an Oxford-educated 50-something trying to make his way through the world of modern poker. If you enjoy tales from the worldwide poker scene (and don’t mind reading a bad beat story or two), Bigger Deal may be up your alley.

Post a comment in this thread (with a valid email address) if you’d like one of the copies. On Sunday, I’ll pick three winners. For USA readers, I’ll ship the book free to you. For non-USA, I ask you to kick in $5 for shipping.

in.

For brownie points: if a player checks behind on the turn with the intention of raising the river with a WA/WB type hand in limit holdem, then he’s usually giving up value from hands that were drawing on the turn. Further, he’ll put himself in a rough situation on the river when he gets threebet, because its a super obvious and profitable spot for good players to bluff, he has a hand that can catch a bluff, but despite all of this he’ll tend to be up against monster hands too many times to make the call.

:)

guruman, I think if villain checks the turn, you have to reevaluate whether you’re WA/WB anyway.

Poker, another great past time under attack by the great morality that calls itself the federal government. I can go to Tunica, Vegas, Atalantic City or hundrds of other places where poker is played in the USA but the feds don’t want me sitting at home on my PC playing Texas Hold-em…. more precisely, they do’t want me depositing funds in an offshore poker operation.

Social engineering through government restriction… just what we all need. US Rep. Marsha Blackburn tells me she voted to restrict my rights so that the terrorist money can be controlled…. SAY WHAT?

Freedom, in the USA? Ha!

Give it to me, please. Psychology says people feel the need to reciprocate good deeds. I’ll give you a compliment below, and you can give me the book. Thanks!

Ed, you seem to be a member of a rare breed of people who use their minds to logically think through problems. So many people (and poker players) don’t think things through, and I admire those who do.

I’d like the book. Let’s see.

have many books, HOH1-3, etc, and your SSHE, & NLT&P, but not yet GSIH as I hadn’t considered going back to the basics. I may pick that up for the short-stack strategy.

I have a question about short-stack strategy though. If you play a 20BB shortstack and double–you are not-so-short anymore, and can’t squirrel it away. What next? Find a new table?

Cheers,
Buzz
